Step-Up learners taste heritage through food, dance, and tradition

Parents and teachers joined hands at Step-Up Witbank Campus to treat learners to home-cooked traditional dishes and Zulu dance performances to celebrate heritage day.

Learners at Step-Up Witbank Campus experienced the richness of South African culture during a vibrant Heritage Day celebration on September 22.

According to Grade R teacher Lerenchia Horn, the annual celebration aimed to expose the children to different cultures while highlighting that everyone is unique.

Horn explained that this year they focused on Zulu, Xhosa and Afrikaans cultures, as most of their learners belong to those groups.

Parents support cultural showcase

Parents played a major role in the day’s success, with some arranging for Zulu dancers to entertain the learners while teaching them traditional dance and culture.

Others contributed a variety of traditional home-cooked meals representing different cultures for the learners to taste.

For Zulu and Xhosa cultures, the children sampled traditional dishes such as umngqusho (samp and beans), isijingi (pumpkin and maize dish) and amadumbe (taro).

For Afrikaans culture, learners were served boerewors, biltong, vetkoek, milk tart, pap and gravy.

“Everything went very well; it all went according to plan,” said Horn, thanking parents for their support in making the day a success.
