Witbank High hosts mental health and GBV awareness

The fun walk brought together over 100 participants who walked 4.9km with purpose.

Witbank High School hosted a fun walk on Saturday to raise awareness about mental health, gender-based violence and cancer.

According to sports chairperson Chiraso Moyane, the event was organised to help learners and community members deal with mental health challenges.

“People are always caught up with anxieties, depression and so forth, so we wanted them to walk freely in expressing that it’s okay to have emotions, but it does not mean that you must be stuck there,” Moyane said.

She encouraged physical activity as a coping mechanism, urging people to always take a walk, join marathons, or do any exercise to keep their minds active when not feeling well.

Walk tackles GBV and cancer

The walk also took a stand against gender-based violence, as Moyane said they wanted to teach boys and the broader school community to protect women and themselves, and to report unsafe situations instead of staying quiet.

The event also focused on cancer awareness. Moyane said they wanted to show support to those battling any type of cancer and to encourage healthy living through good nutrition, hydration and regular self-checks.

Community backs wellness drive

More than 100 people, young and old, participated in the 4.9km walk, and the chairperson commended everyone for dedicating their precious time to such a positive initiative.

“The event was a resounding success. We had no injuries; everything was perfect,” she said.

She added that community support was essential and confirmed that the school planned to continue organising wellness and physical activities.
