If it makes you happy

People are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.

People are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.

What is happiness to you? What does happiness feel like? Is it seeing your partner or kids after a long day? Is it meeting up with old friends and having a laugh? Is it the roar of the crowd when your favourite team scores the winning points? Is it just being alone and reading a book? We all seek happiness and here’s the secret I’ve found through my few years on earth; you create your own happiness. Nobody will be able to make you as happy as you can make yourself and nobody is responsible for your happiness.

These days happiness is just a click away. We wait on the social media world to serve us up with another dose of instant happiness through a video or photo you like to get the juices flowing. We create our personas and form our boundaries for happiness where all is fine in the world. This all sounds so depressing but it’s the easiest way to get instant gratification and you don’t have to be a millennial to enjoy the experience. This all leads me to believe that we know how to ‘fake’ our levels of being content and paint our picture that we want to exhibit.

When I look at my daughter, I feel an indescribable feeling. Its happiness, sadness, excitement and stress all bundled together and constantly churning away. My happiness is less of what I have but more of what I do. Don’t get me wrong, I love having a new phone or a new guitar but no item will give me the happiness of what and who I have in my life at the moment.

Happiness is lost in our country and I feel it more and more every day. Friends and family packing bags, leaving for greener pastures. The allure of another country calling to them, seducing them with happiness. Will our own happiness return? Will we feel content again on our own soil? I don’t know. But the least we can do is try.
