Everyday something will become your first time; will you remember it fondly?
My daughter is growing up in front of my very eyes. Coming back from work after a few hours I can almost see her changes as they happened. It’s a very bittersweet feeling every day because you want to keep them small and safe but life has different plans. You can try your best but time will always win.
We have all had firsts in our life, some great and some not so great but every new experience will always be your first but you choose to make it your second. Stealing liquor from you parents when you were young and drinking it ‘skelm’ or stealing your first kiss at a house party when your friends aren’t looking. Bungee jumping the tallest bridge in Africa while trying to keep your cool but all the while you’re thinking why the hell did I say yes to this? Falling in love and seeing your future in front of you while you try to comprehend how lucky you are to be so blessed with them. See I’ve had many firsts but the biggest one for me is learning how to live with my daughter.
Every day is a first for her and it’s a beautiful sight to see. The way her facial expressions light up the room when a new toy is in front of her or the way she starts to giggle when Buddy walks past and she grabs the tail. The feeling of touching grass for the first time and screaming with glee as a lady bug sits on her arm. Being able to share these experiences with her and learn her is the biggest privilege I have ever received.
Out of all the firsts there is one I will always want as a second, and third and forever; The smile I get from my daughter when I see her after coming home. These are the firsts we all need in life.
