Back to school

He even tried new study methods to help him remember the work

Leaving school on the last day of matric is something that no one will forget…saying goodbye to friends and teachers…excited about never returning.

It has been years since going to school and I must say today I wish I was still in school because life after school is showing some people flames.

Fred matriculated with me and didn’t go on to study after school like 60% of our matric class. Instead he started working from the get-go.

Fred got the opportunity to do a 5-day course that includes going to class, getting homework and writing a test on the fifth day; he was so excited.

On the first day it was like meeting the new friends in grade one for him, and he had to introduce himself.

Fred said: “Hi, my name is Fred and I’m an alcoholic.”

This was not the way to do it, because it was not that type of course in the first place, but Fred had to break the tension in the room and it took some nerves away from a lot of attendees I think.

Fred made the best of his 5-day course; he even got a perfect attendance during the course; big shocker.

But it was something for Fred to get used to, he didn’t study anything for years and now he had to go to class, do homework and study just for one week.

Fred’s first battle was sitting still in class and listening, knowing Fred he was a handful just to sit still in school.

He didn’t do homework in school, to start now was even a first for him and I don’t think he even studied so hard in school as he did now.

He even tried new study methods to help him remember the work.

I sometimes think that this is a very important step, not only did Fred do something to put on his CV, but it opened another door that might lead him to do more courses.

Fred is currently waiting for his results like an excited top academic student waiting for their report card.

But wouldn’t you, if I knew what I know now since my last day of high school, I could’ve worked harder.

It also taught me a valuable life lesson that high school was not the end but only the beginning and that it is never too late to add to your knowledge.

If you had the opportunity to go back to school, would you do anything differently?
