Loads of fun with annual Bridge and Back race

Witbank Yacht and Aquatic club’s annual Bridge and Back race is just around the corner.

Records show that this could be the 40th year of this event, which is scheduled to take place on Witbank dam over the weekend of 18 and 19 January.

This is a sponsored fun with the main event being the race to the Duvha Bridge and back, starting at 09:00 on Sunday, January 18 with a dash to the weather mark to get a good beat before tearing off to the Duvha Bridge across the Olifants River.

Traditionally, when Witbank was a lot quieter and safer the wives and kids would drive to the dam to meet the yachties at what was Ted Kerr’s farm, and ice cold refreshments and lunch would be enjoyed by all.

In more modern times, the refreshments are transported down the dam to the bridge by the rescue boat, and then follows the mad dash to sail back to the club in record time.

In the clubhouse prize giving was held and lunch served (there’s always been a tradition attached to that also – lasagne and lemon meringue pie made with love by Sherryl Davidson whose husband, Don, was commodore for about 14 years).

The 2014 bridge and back event will be run on the same lines with bar facilities, catering, free camping and, thanks to the recent heavy rains, lots and lots of water to sail on.   It’s a fun for the whole family weekend and for more information contact Dave Martinson: 082 892 9905, John Wegerele: 082 565 7190 or Pikkie Smit: 082 493 0173.
