Junior tennis development still on track

The first junior development tennis tournament for the year was a success.

On Saturday, February 15 a junior development tennis tournament took place on the courts of Cambridge Academy.

This was the first tournament in the red ball stage of development to give youngsters an idea of fun and competition at a very early age. Kids between the ages of seven -10 years competed on the mini-courts to show their skills. There has been a drastic growth in participation over the last three years due to the initiatives from Mpumalanga Tennis Association in co-operation with support from the National Lottery. More and more kids from the region got the exposure to grow their skills.

In the boys group it was Ryan Doyle from Curro Bankenveld that came out tops amongst the boys. Jarred de Klerk and Tsheamo Mabena finished second and third respectively. For the girls it was Caitlin Pitout who earned a first place. Desiree Morodi from Duvhapark Primary finished second, while Gift Nkumba from Cambridge Academy finished in third place.

“Looking at all the opportunities beckoning for the kids in eMalahleni, we can expect to see some future champions rising to the top,” said tennis coach Charl Basson.
