For the love of the game

“I work quite hard and spend a lot of time at the Hockey Farm”

Shanerie Bronkhorst is going on 17 and will be representing the province in senior hockey for the second time.
She was selected to play hockey for the women’s interprovincial team (A-team) and will be competing in the interprovincial tournament this April in Randburg.

“I work quite hard and spend a lot of time at the Hockey Farm,” she says.

She has taken the sport to a whole new level over the past three years and put that determination to focus.

“It has been quite exciting, I have done a bit of travelling for the sport, been to Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, and Cape Town, where I played in the indoor competition,” she said.

Shanerie has hockey in her blood and although being quite formidable in most positions on the field, she has taken a liking to playing right link (similar to right mid) and when asked if she kept count of her goals she had this to say.

“I honestly don’t keep track on goals, I concentrate more on field play than in the circle, I am more for creating the plays that result in goals – in the end it’s the team that wins and not the player,” she said.

She went on to say that she started playing the sport for the love of it and will be representing the province for the second time in a row now.
Despite being injured, like in any other sport there are risks, she continues to chase her dream.

“I wasn’t to give a big thanks to my parents Renitia and Nico and a very big thanks to the Hockey Farm, Witbank Hockey Club and to the coaches there, without them I wouldn’t be in the position I am today, thank you,” she said
