Mandini wins cup cliffhanger

Mandini Rugby Club beat a strong Hluhluwe team

THE Mandini Rugby Club ended the 2013 season on a high when they beat a very strong Hluhluwe team 8-5 in the Brockwell Cup final played at the Mandini Rugby Club last Friday night.

It was a typical final – not attractive rugby, but it was a hard, tough match with not much to choose between the two teams.

The tackling was absolutely superb from both sides, keen to pick upa sub-union trophy for the 2013 season.

Mandini, who won last year’s final between the same two teams, lead 8-0 at half-time.

Their points came from a try to Danie Vermaak junior, who scored after Wouter Vermaak gave him the final pass and a run in from 25 meters out. Davie Lindeque missed the conversion, but made up for this a little later by kicking a penalty to give his team the lead at the break.

But Hluhluwe were determined opposition and gave the home team a real run for their money in the second half.

Their try midway through was scored by Nick Nkomo who ran in from the halfway line. Had Riaan Smal’s conversion attempt been successful, the gap between the teams would of been reduced to one point.

Smal, their regular kicker, was having an off day with the boot and Hluhluwe had to make do with the runners-up place.
