Mowing her way to the top

Starting off as a simple door-to-door grass cutter, Ngema watched her business grow

Mowing her way to the top is Zululand’s Zandile Ngema who is now the proud owner of her own grass cutting company, Vuka Ntombi, which means ‘wake up ladies’.

Ngema from the rural heart of Bhedi reserve in oBanjeni started her business to encourage young women to be independent and create their own income.

Starting off as a simple door-to-door grass cutter, Ngema was determined to develop her business into a thriving one.

However, with only a standard three education, it was definitely a road full of rubble to the top. She is an inspiring woman as she worked hard and persevered to make her dreams a reality.

Conquering the stigma about men having more power and skills than women, Ngema has created employment for almost ten community members. She has offices in oBanjeni and is doing very well.

‘All I wanted is to encourage young women not to depend on men for survival but rather make something for themselves. Women can do things that men can, there is no difference in our capabilities,’ said a proud Ngema.

In her prosperous business, Ngema also takes part in the uniform hand-over to local schools, as a way of giving back to her community.

She told the Zululand Observer that she aims to have seminars with young girls, educating them about business and other skills.
