From Germany, with love

German volunteer in love with Zululand, returns for a second time to serve at iKhaya likaBaba orphanage.

OVERFLOWING with compassion, German volunteer Timon Heuser (22) has made a return trip to Zululand to spend time at iKhaya LikaBaba – a non-profit organisation for orphaned and abandoned children.

A third year university student of Social and Economic Sciences, as well as a youth and worship ministry leader back home, Heuser has his hands full – and yet still has time to spare a couple of weeks in Zululand.

‘It is such an amazing experience to be back here. I enjoy it every time,’ says Heuser.

In 2007 he embarked on a trip to southern Africa and on his travels heard of a Solid Ground Church project starting up. He knew that he needed to get involved.

In 2010 Heuser returned, spending an entire gap year in Zululand.

‘My heart was filled with an intense passion to serve,’ says Heuser.

Reaching out to the ministry, youth and orphanage, he was adamant to sew into the lives of people.

‘I needed to give back because I have received so much.’

Returning to the local non-profit organisation last month, Heuser leaves for Germany on 4 October.

‘I believe God has called me to do this. I knew on my first trip that it would be something special. God put love in my heart for South Africa and it hasn’t stopped,’ Heuser says.

‘When you serve, you think that you’re giving, but you actually receive so much more,’ he adds.

With his stay drawing to an end shortly, Heuser smiles and says, ‘I could imagine myself living here. It’s an option and I’m open to change. I am just allowing God to lead the way.’
