WALKING long distances to catch a taxi in eSikhaleni has become a problem of the past as Esikhawini Taxi Association (ETA) officially launched an arrangement to take more roads and pick up those who are not closer to the bus stop.
The initiative was aimed at assisting passengers who walk far to get to a taxi/bus stop every day.
Passengers who walk to eSihlahleni, Diphini, Manguni and KwaThango were relieved and excited with the news, saying it will ‘save’ their lives.
Manono Mkhize from eSikhaleni H2 section told the Zululand Observer that the new agreement will prevent them from mugging which is on the increase in the area.
‘These criminals wait for us at the bus/taxi shelters when we walk to our homes. This arrangement will actually help us get home safe and quick. I am excited about the new change and thank the ETA for thinking of us,’ said Mkhize.
ETA chairman Nkosi Mzimela said that they were hoping to include other rural parts of the township, such as uMkhobose, Madlankala and ward 18 area.
‘We saw how people are struggling to get a taxi, especially elderly passengers.
‘This initiative will also assist with crime, because people won’t have to walk through these dark corners. We would have loved to include other places, however we are still trying to find solutions. I would also like to extend my apology to those who won’t benefit from these changes, but we will look at it,’ said Mzimela.
