Drug walk countdown

There's barely a week to go until the 7tn annual SANCA/Bay Watch 'Walk Away From Drugs' event at the Zululand Yacht Club

IT’S barely a week to go before the seventh annual – and revamped – SANCA/Bay Watch ‘Walk Away From Drugs’ event takes place on Saturday 26 October.

Early indications are that this could be a record entry, as the event now also includes mountain bike and paddling (canoe and stand-up) sections.

There’s a new venue: the superb facilities of the Zululand Yacht Club, whose committee and members have embraced this worthy cause with a passion.

As usual, there will be plenty of food, fellowship and fun and another added dimension is the ‘SANCA Miss Zululand’ contest.

Registration can be done on the day, from 7am, at the yacht club.

Dress up and pitch up with a slogan or banner to win one of the many prizes on offer.

Entry fee is only R10 for adults and R5 for children.

Schools are encouraged to pre-enter and the school with the most entrants on the day will receive a computer and printer kindly donated by BHP Billiton, who are also sponsoring medals for all participants.

The emphasis is on the fun aspect and none of the entrants in any of the events will be racing for first place.

The aim is to promote and raise funds for SANCA, create awareness of drug and alcohol abuse, and promote healthy outdoor activities as an alternative to an addictive lifestyle.

Prior to the 9am mass start of the walk/pedal/paddle, entertainment will include the Vikings Athletics strong men, aTaikwondo demo and hopefully the SAP sniffer dogs, if they aren’t out catching criminals.

The musical warm-up will again be loads of fun, formalities will be kept to a minimum and the 5.7km stroll around Naval Island (turn back at any stage) with action at the numerous watering holes, will be the highlight.

The MTB section will include a ride for pre-schoolers/toddlers who can enjoy a loop under the trees opposite the Yacht Club, with a small trophy for the ‘winner’.

The family fun rides over 5kms and 12kms will tackle part of the well-known Fish Eagle trail.

A number of prizes will be on offer but the organisers urgently need more, so contact the Sanca office on 035 7723290 or Dave on 072 3920511 if you can assist.
