Champions needed to fight domestic violence

THE countdown to the 16 Days of Activism campaign has begun and Reaching Out Domestic Violence Support Desk is calling on the public to support the cause.
Held from 25 November to 10 December, the organisation will embark on the global campaign to end gender-based violence and promote the significance of wearing the white and purple ribbon, a symbol of peace and in remembrance of those victims who lost their lives in domestic violence incidents.
This year the centre has planned a candle-lighting ceremony, awareness programmes at schools and businesses, a peace march as well as a community fun day event which will highlight the negative impact of violence on women and children.
Reaching Out founder Pam Govender said the organisation is now a member of the Gender-based Violence Prevention Network (GBVP), a dynamic group of activists and practitioners committed to preventing gender-based violence in southern Africa.
‘The network is made up of 380 members from 24 different countries and is a powerhouse of information resources.
‘We have married the global and GBVP Network theme to create a local theme, ‘Peace in the home, peace in the world: We all have the power, how are you using yours?’.
‘We encourage the community to wear the ribbons, which are on sale at R5 and symbolise the wearers commitment to refrain from acts of violence against women and children and report incidences they witness,’ Govender said.
