POLICE warn the community to be on the alert after several residences in Meerensee were stripped of copper water piping and taps.
This was reported during the Non-Ferrous Theft Combatting Committee (NFTCC) meeting on Thursday where Richards Bay SAPS’ W/O P Raidoo said incidents of theft of copper piping at properties in Richards Bay remained a problem.
He asked scrap metal dealers to be weary of purchasing these items if they are not being sold by a plumber.
The Kwamsane area is still experiencing theft of electricity meter boxes and Telkom reported losses of R234 000 to theft of poles and damaged optic fibre cables.
It was highlighted that while the eSikhawini robots were now up and running, criminals are targeting other robots in Richards Bay.
Business Against Crime Manager Dave Whittaker said the recently established Security Companies Forum will assist to deter criminal activity around the city.
‘BAC, police and security companies have formed a working partnership and security officers have been requested to be on the lookout for suspicious activities at traffic lights while conducting their patrols,’ he said.
