THE 7th annual Sanca Zululand/Bay Watch ‘Walk Away from Drugs’ event proved a great success on Saturday as hundreds of walkers, cyclists and paddlers pitched when the sun broke through after a night of rain.
Thanks to many sponsors, there were plenty of prizes and lots of ‘side shows’ to entertain and amuse the entrants.
Awards presented included:
Most entries (corporate) – BHP Billiton
Most entries (schools) – Veldenvlei Primary
2nd (schools) – Floraton Primary
3rd (schools) – Richards Bay Christian School
Best banner – Protea Hotel Richards Bay
Best slogan – Trellique Modelling
Best spirit – Richards Bay IDZ
Lyn Williams handed over the trophy for the corporate with the most entrants to Kobus Beukes (with his children Dylan and Juane) of BHP Billiton, who also supplied all the medals for the day
Police sniffer dog ‘Tjokkie’ thrilled the children with his ability to find hidden drugs
Every man and his dog stopped off at the Richards Bay CPF table, which was voted best watering hole

Veldenvlei Primary once again won the prize for the most entries and were presented with a computer and printer by BHPBilliton’s Dumi Nxumalo, newly-appointed Maintenance Manager at Hillside responsible for maintenance at Carbon and T&L
Bruce Madura put the taekwando students through their paces in an awesome display that included tile-breaking
Floraton Primary were excited to receive 10 boxes of paper and a roll of poster paper courtesy of Mondi Richards Bay Mill
