Grandpa rapist drunk in court

Drunken grandfather accused of raping his granddaughter

An eSikhaleni pensioner accused of raping his six-year-old grandchild earlier this year appeared in court too drunk to face the charge.

The 65-year-old man appeared briefly in the eSikhawini Regional Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning; but the case was remanded as he was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.

He was arrested in August after a case was opened at the police by his niece, who claimed she witnessed him without his clothes on with the victim.

The subsequent investigation and medical report revealed that the young victim was raped.

Her young mother, a student at the University of Zululand, told the court that she was worried when her daughter went missing.

‘I looked all over for her, but she was not with the other children. I eventually went to the two-room house where I saw him naked with my daughter behind him,’ explained the tearful mother.

The victim also testified and informed the court that he had asked her to help him search for his matches in his room before he raped her.

The case was postponed to 25 November for cross examination.
