DARE-DEVIL thieves have scaled up the side of the Nseleni Floodplain Bridge to steal cable from the lights at the eSikhaleni intersection on the John Ross Parkway.
Construction authorities reported at Tuesday’s Public Liaison Committee that thieves used a makeshift ladder to climb about 6 metres upward to the balustrade where they removed cable from the lighting poles – smashing through concrete with a sledgehammer to gain access.
Some 400 metres of cabling was stolen, and once again the street lighting at the highly dangerous intersection is non-functional, just two weeks after it was replaced.
Cable and equipment thefts have plagued the highway project since it began, with both time and money lost, and much inconvenience to the motoring public.
Plans are in place to deal with the thefts and Business Against Crime Zululand has once again offered assistance in this regard.
