Check your posture!
Back at work in the new year, make sure you sit right at your desk
MANY of us spend hours each week day sitting at a desk, in front of a computer screen.
If you don’t take note of your posture, you could be affecting your health and doing damage to your circulation and your spine.
The SA Society of Physiotherapy gives the following advice:
Sit up straight.
Your back should be firmly supported by the back of the chair – do not slump.
Chin in
Your chin should be tucked in and should not be protruding.
Your head and shoulders should be directly aligned with your hips.
Chair savvy
Avoid chairs that are too low or too soft.
Keep your feet on the floor or footrest.
Move it
Never sit in the same position for more than an hour.
Stand up, walk around, or just have a stretch.
Straight on
Sit squarely facing your desk, table, television or pc.
Don’t twist your back or hips.
Armed
Keep your upper arms vertical and your forearms horizontal and supported.
Lighten up
You should not have to peer at your screen.
Make sure there is little glare or reflection, and that your office is well-lit.
Use a screen that is tilt-adjustable.
Flat
Keep your feet together – don’t cross your legs or ankles – and on the floor or on a foot rest.
