Stable base for smart salvage

Barge platform makes MV Smart salvage safer

THE difficult and dangerous task of working on the sloping wreck of the MV Smart off Alkantstrand has been eased with the erection alongside of a jack-up barge equipped with cranes.

Salvage crews now have a solid platform from which to work as they continue the long process of emptying the holds and ultimately towing the fore section of the ship to be scuttled at sea.

The huge Karlissa-B jack-up barge owned by salvers, Titan, has over 900 metres of deck space and can operate in virtually any marine environment.

The salvage operation has until now been severely hampered by adverse weather and sea conditions but now work can continue above the active surf zone.

The lengthy salvage process is scheduled for completion in November 2015.The Karlissa-B has a 272 metric tonnes capacity platform ringer crane, enabling massive vertical lift and horizontal pull.

With its sister vessel, the Karlissa-A, the jack-up barges have been deployed by Titan in hundreds of salvage and wreck removal projects around the world.
