One dead, eleven injured on R66

The R66 between Melmoth and Ulundi closed after horror smash.

ONE person died and eleven others were seriously injured in an accident on the R66 between Melmoth and Ulundi on Saturday.

KZN EMS paramedics and an air ambulance attended the crash, which occurred when a mini-bus taxi overturned. One person died instantly, and the road was closed.

‘The paramedic on scene called for the assistance of the air ambulance due to the critical injuries that the one patient had sustained,’ said Robert Mckenzie, KZN EMS spokesman.

‘When the medical helicopter landed near the scene, the critically injured patient was loaded into the helicopter and airlifted to Ngwelezane Hospital for continued medical care.

‘The other 10 patients were transported by KZN EMS and a private ambulance service to Kwamagwaza Hospital.’

The cause of the accident and the preceding events are being investigated by the police
