Protest power seizes Mzingazi streets

Marchers blocked the main road from Richards Bay through Mzingazi to RBM this morning.

ABOUT 4000 community members took their frustrations to the main road in Mzingazi this morning to hand over memorandums to Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), Mondi and the Mfolozi Municipality.

According to KwaMbonambi Station Commander Colonel Mgenge, locals from Mzingazi, Mposa, Sokhulu and Nhlabane gathered to voice their needs for better health services, improved infrastructure, adequate water and sanitation facilities as well as more work opportunities.

‘They also asked to get their land back from Mondi forestry,’ said Mgenge.

Police said the protest already started as early as 2am to 3am.

Marchers had blocked the main road from Richards Bay through Mzingazi to RBM with rubble, logs and tires, but police managed to clear the streets before 7:30am.

‘There were no damages to properties and no injuries sustained,’ Mgenge said.
