Painting at the gardens

'Golden Oldies' spend the morning painting.

FROM Zululand to England and back again with her brush in hand, Yvonne Erasmus delights in painting.

Focusing on water painting, Erasmus shared the journey of her art on Friday morning with some of the Golden Oldies at Leisure Gardens.

The talk dubbed ‘Never Too Old To Start Painting’, Erasmus told of her passion and skill.

‘I only do water paintings, mostly of birds and the occasional ones of animals or flowers,’ said Erasmus.

‘I have always had a creative flair and at one point wanted to be a commercial artist. I ventured into painting 12 years ago when I was invited to a Tupperware party,’

‘I had heard one of the ladies invited was a painter and I jokingly asked if she would teach me and she agreed – which I didn’t expect. I spent four months under her guidance and then took it from there,’

‘In 2010 I spent 18 months in England where I cared for well known English artist, Steven Jennings, who taught me background and perspective techniques. When I returned, I had the opportunity to exhibit one of my paintings at a Gallery and also at Green Africa Nursery,’ she said.

Vincent van Gogh once said the only time he feels alive is when he is painting; and that same fire and passion shows through in Erasmus’ work.
