Fire season is coming, are you ready?

Working on Fire (WoF) launches its fire campaign at Mbongolwane.

IN preparation for the upcoming KZN fire season, Working on Fire (WoF) launched their fire campaign at Mbongolwane on Monday, 26 May.

Working with uThungulu District Disaster Management, uMlalazi Municipality and Tongaat Hullet the launch focused on preparing the community and educating them on how to make their homes safe during the fire season.

The presentations included fire weather using the fire danger index, making of fire breaks and personal safety measures such as ‘stop, drop and roll’.

Speaking at the launch, WoF Community Fire Awareness Officer, Makhosi Dladla said it is imperative that at the start of the fire season the community is well informed on the dangers and precautions to take before and during the fire season.

She said it is important that communities are trained in fire management.

The WoF crew then showed the community how to make a fire break at one of the homes.

The team will be visiting homesteads belonging to the aged and children-headed households to assist them with the making of fire breaks.

Dladla said, ‘WoF is preparing the province for the fire season with 600 trained wildland fire fighters who are stationed at 27 bases throughout KwaZulu-Natal during the fire season to assist local authorities, conservation agencies and farmers to fight fires.’
