Single father of two disabled children left homeless
Single father of two loses everything in blaze.
A SINGLE father of two disabled, young children was left stranded in May when his home was razed by a mysterious fire.
According to Mphumzeni Mngomezulu, the fire came from nowhere, and completely destroyed his three-roomed house and a rondavel, forcing him to send his children to go stay with his mother.
‘Everything we had inside the house was damaged, including food. We only had the clothes we were wearing,’ cried Mngomezulu.
The neighbours, as well as Ntambanana Municipality PR Councillor, M Mabaso helped this destitute family with clothes, food and materials to build a temporary shelter.
Ntambanana Municipality Ward 7 Councillor, Mubi Sibiya said, ‘As soon as I heard about what happened to Mngomezulu, I went to see him, but unfortunately he was not at home.
I then asked Disaster Management to send him food parcels and find him a tent to sleep in, in the meantime. But all the tents had been allocated to the families whose homes had also been burnt by a fire at KwaBiyela.
‘We are waiting for Disaster Management to find us a tent for this family.’
Ntambanana Municipality Disaster Management Manager, NC Mthethwa said when they visited Mngomezulu he was not at home, but left the food parcels and blankets with his neighbours.
‘We had to contact him telephonically and took the necessary information which we sent to uThungulu District Municipality and to the KZN Provincial Department of Human Settlements, for them to assist this family with shelter,’ said Mthethwa.
Mngomezulu, who survives by doing odd jobs, has a 15-year-old son who, because he is disabled, has never been to school and a seven-year-old daughter who is also disabled.
