A SUCCESSFUL Macambini Sports Day was held on Youth Day (16 June).
This year was the third year that Tongaat Hulett supported the event, bringing cheer and festivities to the youth.
For the first time, this year’s competing teams included two female teams, Mpendulo and Lambothi.
Other teams included Madrid, Revolution, FC United and Real Knockers.
The winning teams were Revolution FC (U13s), Lambothi FC (ladies) and Real Knockers (seniors).
In 2012, Tongaat Hulett, in partnership with Simamisa and the Macambini Tribal Authority, invested R1.1-million towards the renovation of a sports ground in the area and launched the Macambini Sports Day on Youth Day.
Nkonzo Mhlongo, Tongaat Hulett Socio-economic Development Manager said,’This year’s sports day was outstanding.
‘For the first time we had two competing female soccer teams and the event was graced by 30 Amakhosi, including Inkosi KW Mathaba of the Macambini area who hosted the traditional leaders.
‘The stadium was packed to capacity with more than 1 000 spectators.
‘This just shows that the people of Macambini have started taking sports and recreation seriously and now see it as one of the key components of community development,’ said Mhlongo.
She said this is an indication that the company’s investment in the community is yielding results.
During the breaks between the games, the players and spectators were treated to Kwaito dance contests and traditional dancing by local dance teams.
Further investments
The relationship between Tongaat Hulett and Macambini goes far beyond the sports day. The company has also invested in the education of the community by contributing R2-million towards the renovation of Madlanga High Shool, Ohwebede and Sikhuthele Primary Schools.
Tongaat Hulett is committed to promoting sustainable rural development.
The company has accelerated the sugar cane development programme within this community with 4 591ha under cane.
This development has resulted in the employment of 149 residents as permanent staff and 201 residents are employed as seasonal workers.
Tongaat Hulett firmly believes the company’s partnership with the Macambini traditional leadership council has significantly contributed to improved quality of life and increased household income.
