AS this week comes to a close, all eyes are on the Vodacom Durban July, taking place this Saturday. Considered as the most adrenaline soaked two minutes in South African sport, this is one event you won’t want to miss out on.
Local Zululanders have been keeping the bookies busy with most of the town placing their money on the firm favourite, Louis The King.
Surprisingly though, many are keeping faith in one of the top contenders, Rake’s Chestnut who stands at 15/2. Elize White from Hollywood Bets in Empangeni told the Zululand Observer on Tuesday that ‘In The Fast Lane’ (a three-year-old filly) was one horse she would strongly consider.
However, for those high rollers, who favour experience over form, they would probably consider Cherry On The Top, who is a four-year-old sitting at the lower end of the ranking at 20/1. But with in-form rider, Weichong Marwing, who knows what could happen.
For the first time in the Vodacom Durban July, there will only be 16 runners as opposed to the regular 20.
The introduction of the new polytrack has resulted in the exclusion of a previous winner, Pomodoro, who is now a reserve runner in the race.
If the bookies are kept as busy as they have been with the Fifa World Cup, then there should be much at stake for Zululand punters this weekend.
