TWO brazen thieves held up cashiers at a busy garage shop in Veldenvlei on Saturday evening, making off with a small amount of cash and a large number of cigarette packs.
The pair, one wearing a handkerchief over his face and the other with a cap pulled down low, entered the Engen Convenient Store at about 7.15pm.
One suspect carried a handgun but no shots were fired during the incident.
After first ensuring the security guard could not send a panic alarm, the pair calmly instructed the cashiers to load the money and cigarettes into kit bags.
Amazingly, patrons standing in queues to be served did not react to what was happening before their eyes.
CCTV footage showed no apparent awareness of what was taking place.
Three minutes later, the men then sauntered outside and disappeared in the direction of bushes opposite the garage.
Staff, who had previously been advised to offer no resistance in the event of a robbery, were traumatised and in need of counselling.
Police are examining the video footage.
