Pensioners take a stand

Transnet pensioners gather outside the Metropolitan offices to show their dismay for unpaid pensions

TRANSNET pensioners showed their dismay when they gathered in their numbers on Wednesday morning in a peaceful protest outside the Metropolitan buildings in Empangeni.

The pensioners are reportedly upset over a failure to payout pensions owed and promised to them.

In April, the parastatal announced that Transnet pensioners were set to receive a 13th cheque to a total value of R178-million, benefiting about 67 000 members.

However, according to Dumisani Dludla, one of the protesting pensioners, this has not taken place and pensioners are facing extreme hardships making it difficult to survive.

At the time of going to the press Metropolitan were unavailable for comment.
