Operation ‘Duty Calls’ is underway for festive season

More than 800 suspects arrested since Monday

AS the festive season approaches, police across the province last week launched ‘Operation Duty Calls’ aimed at eradicating crime over the next month.

Empangeni police, headed by Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, took to the streets of Empangeni Rail and have since been making their way through the City.

Under strict instruction by Minister of Police Nkosinathi Nhleko and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega, Provincial Commissioner of KZN Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni made a commitment to ensure that the people of the province are and feel safe.

‘We have collated information of possible suspects. Dockets that came under the microscope this week included serious cases such as murder, hijacking, cash-in-transit heists, robbery, rape, assault, theft, burglary and fraud,

‘Intensive work done since Monday this week has yielded phenomenal successes. We have arrested over 830 suspects,’ she said.

With the merry season often comes the increased abuse of alcohol and drugs which contributes to other crime such as murder, assault and domestic violence.

‘I would also like to assure of the people of KZN that vacation leave for police officials over this period has been restricted to ensure that we have sufficient police members ready to deal with any and all eventualities that may occur over this period,’ Ngobeni added.
