Ice rink on the cards for City
New additions are being planned for the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre.
BOARDWALK Inkwazi Shopping Centre’s expansion plans topped the agenda at an uMhlathuze Council meeting on Tuesday.
BAU Design architect Pravash Authar presented the proposed phase three extension plans on behalf of their client, Resilient Property Fund (Pty) Ltd.
‘We estimate the costs of this expansion to be between R200 – 300 million. Our main concern is accessibility, in the sense that we don’t want to inconvenience anybody while work is in progress,’ he said.
Some of the major attractions include the building of an ice rink and family entertainment area in the lower level, which will be complemented with a variety of restaurants and a bowling alley.
Adjustment to many of the mall’s stores such as Woolworths, Game, Truworths, Hub and Food Lovers Market will be done to cater for the new parking decks that will be created at both the upper and lower levels.
The new upper level parking deck will link the shopping centre to the existing ground floor of the Standard Bank building, with entrance five being modified with a glass finish touch.
The plans include adding an additional Gross Leasable Area of approximately 14 000m2, with the project being split up into different phases in order for there to be minimal disruptions for both tenants and customers.

In response to the use of local labour, Authar was confident that the regional unemployment gap will be narrowed by locals securing big contracts.
uMhlathuze Municipality Speaker Mduduzi Mhlongo also highlighted that executive council members have been concerned for a while over the way the town currently looks.
Final time frames for the project have not yet been established as it is still in the initial stages.
