No principal at Mtubatuba school

Chaos at leaderless Emawombe High School.

TEACHERS of Emawombe High School near Mtubatuba took an official complaint to the KwaMsane Department of Education office, saying the school is non-functional and demanded answers for the lack of a principal.

Members of the National Teachers’ Union (NATU) said the department is aware of the situation, but has done nothing to rectify it.

Principal Mkhwanazi left Emawombe High in 2013 and since then, numerous temporary principals have stepped in, only to leave months later.

Most recently it was Mr Zungu, the principal of a nearby primary school, who was allegedly asked by the local Department of Education to fill the role at Emawombe in conjunction with his role at the primary school.

This he did until January, when his union reportedly advised him to return to his official post at the primary school.

During Zungu’s appointment at Emawombe High, however, NATU representatives allege the name of one ‘Cindi’ suddenly appeared on the school’s payroll.

With no apparent person to accompany the name, teachers started asking questions about the legitimacy of this person on the payroll, who allegedly received a salary for December and January.

Teachers say the school is non-functional because, apart from no principal, the Deputy Principal and Head of Department left last month.

There are no text books nor any other school supplies and no one in authority to sign off payment for these.

With no authority at Emawombe High School, pupils are running amok and the insufficient number of teachers are unable to do their jobs properly.

Mr Mthiyane at the KwaMsane Department of Education office declined to comment. uMkhanyakude District Manager for the Department of Education, Mr Motha, was not available for comment.
