Department speaks to drought-stricken Nyezane

Zululand faces a lack of rain and the District grapples with solutions.

AS Zululand faces the lack of rain and the District grapples with solutions, the Department of Water and Sanitation visited the Nyezane community to bring clarity as to why there are water shortages.

The tolerant community was patient in waiting for the officials to arrive as the meeting started several hours late.

Adding to the community’s frustrations was that some key officials were absent and questions could not be answered.

Gibson Gumede of the department explained that the situation was beyond anybody’s control as the drought has gripped KwaZulu-Natal as a whole.

The KZN budget for drought alleviation is R400-million.

This is the amount to deal with the drought and includes the supply of tanks, boreholes and trucks delivering water to the people.

Gumede asked the people to use water wisely as every drop counts.

Cllr CT Ndwalane brought calm to the annoyed crowd as he answered their questions calmly and to their satisfaction.

The day ended with smiles as Jabulani Shandu eMatshana entertained the crowd and they were given freebies.
