Leading the way for fashion designers

Fashionistas gather in Richards Bay.

ASPIRANT fashion designers attended a forum at uThungulu Municipality’s offices this week.

Hosted by the municipality’s local economic development sector, together with the KZN fashion council, the day’s event was intended to provide a support structure for local designers.

Managing Director of THE KZN Fashion Council, Sincengile Ntshingila, said that the purpose of the NPO is to support the design sector through a strategic partnership with the Department of Economic Development and Tourism and various other government entities.

‘Our presence here today is not just to educate you about what the fashion council is about, but also to promote dialogue for us to comprehend the challenges and expectations you have.

‘More importantly, you need to remember that the fashion industry is not all about glitz and glamour, but needs to be run like a fully-fledged business,’ Ntshingila said.

In addition to providing a mentorship role, the Fashion Council also partners with various tertiary institutions to offer bursaries to well-deserving students.

Pam Madide from Ikhiwane Designs brought up the issue of their business being threatened by the Post Office strike, as they often rely on their services when transporting materials countrywide.

Another concern raised and which will be addressed at a higher level of the organisation, is the lack of availability of goods in the region.

Consumer Protection Services representative,Navi Naidu was also present at the meeting and informed all fashion enthusiasts about the factors which play a role in consumer rights and regulations.
