Bus driver sentenced

Closure for the van Aswegen family as the case finally comes to an end.

AFTER almost four years since the Heatonville bus accident which claimed the life of Heuwelland Primary School pupil Alicia van Aswegen, the case of culpable homicide against the bus driver has finally been concluded.

Charged in 2012, Bongani Mkhize was sentenced to three years imprisonment in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court.

According to reports, the bus in question was transporting school teachers to Ntambanana, when it veered into the lane of oncoming traffic when avoiding some obstruction in the road and crashed into a car in which Alicia was a passenger.
