UPDATE: Mashaba’s car crash probe almost finalised

Differences can't be a matter of life and death

THE Road Traffic Inspectorate has announced that the investigation into the cause of the car crash in which ANC Regional Chairperson Thulani Mashaba was killed, would be finalised this week.

Mashaba died a week ago when his car rolled on the N2 near Ballito.

Addressing the tens of thousands mourners who converged at KwaSokhulu’s Dlemudlemu High School on Sunday for Mashaba’s funeral, national ANC Chairperson Baleka Mbethe alluded to rumours linking alleged death threats against Mashaba and the accident.

‘When I heard about the accident that claimed the life of our Regional Chairperson, I was also in Ballito on duty.

‘Then I remembered I had been told that there was an attempt on his life. I’m saying this in passing. But if there is any link between the threats and the cause of the accident, the law must take its course.’

Mbete said the ANC was saddened that a promising and disciplined leader was snatched away from them.

‘It is not for us to question why this has happened. Ours is let the law takes its course and to pick up the spear to surge forward.

‘Ideological conflicts are the order of the day in politics. People do differ from time to time. Even in our homes we don’t always agree on issues, but that cannot be a matter of life and death,’ Mbethe said.

Mashaba’s wife Nobuhle also paid a moving tribute to her late husband.

In her message read out by Nkule Cele, Nobuhle said,’ I thank God for having known you. You left an unforgettable mark in me, my family and the community, and most of all you taught me never to give up. I will miss the good and bad times we had. I loved you, you loved me through thick and thin. You were a pillar of hope. I always knew that no matter what happened to me, I will always have your backing.’

Nobuhle’s family appealed to the community to pray for the two bodyguards who were still in a critical condition at Mediclinic Victoria Hospital in Tongaat.
