eSikhaleni cop on trial for corruption

A police officer is on trial in the Empangeni Magistrate's court for corruption, after assault incident.

A POLICE officer is on trial in the Empangeni Regional Court on charges of corruption, after he allegedly failed to arrest a store manager for assault in return for a R1 000 bribe.

Cst Makhosi Providence Mkhwanazi (30) of eSikhaleni, pleaded not guilty to the charge of corruption.

The State, represented by Regional Court Prosecutor, Sharon Bux, charged him under the Prevention and Combatting of Corrupt Activities Act for unlawfully accepting the money from a store manager, David Mhlongo, in January 2013 at eSikhaleni.

It is alleged that Mhlongo assaulted a Mr Boxer Mchunu, who was caught shoplifting.

He is defended by Mr VB Mthembu.

The matter has been remanded for further evidence to 20 August.
