Educating women on risky sex behaviour
Women exchanging sex for material or financial gain can be considered as sex workers.

LIFELINE Zululand had enlisted several peer educators from the community to help drive their ‘Youth at High Risk’ programme, which focuses on educating young people about the risks involved with having multiple sexual partners for material or financial gain.
According to programme co-ordinator Noxolo Mjobo many women are not aware that any form of sexual favours for benefits translates to sex work.
‘These days, many women have different sexual partners to support their material needs. We often hear women calling their different partners names like Mr Transport, Mr Finance and so forth.
‘We want to educate the youth about this and to remove the stereotypes associated with sex workers.
‘If they choose to remain in this lifestyle however, we provide them with information to protect themselves,’ said Mjobo.
The ‘Red Umbrella’ programme focuses on HIV/Aids, human trafficking, promoting health and hygiene, human rights and condom distribution.
Director of LifeLine Zululand, Michelle Jewlal, said, ‘While it is their decision, we want women to make informed decisions and have the correct information at their disposal. We are hopeful this will encourage behaviour change.’
