Exchange visit by German student

A Richards Bay family is hosting a German foreign exchange student.

A RICHARDS Bay family has opened their doors to a German foreign exchange student who will be living in the town for two weeks.

The Hoorzuk household agreed to participate in the FSA Youth Exchange Programme and is the host family to 16-year-old Nita Schneider.

With the purpose of this programme being to encourage personal growth and development among the youth, the students involved are also expected to learn more about other cultures.

‘The moment I heard SA is one of the countries I could go to, I agreed to participate in the programme.

‘Besides enjoying travelling, I have always wanted to visit this country,’ Nita said.

The self-confessed talkative young lady is currently attending Richards Bay High School with her newly found ‘sisters’, Jenna and Jasmine, and admits she is still trying to adapt.

‘There are a few similarities in terms of school life, but here the people are very conservative.

‘Not everybody is open to talk and interacting.’

Wifi

Although she is enjoying the ‘once in a lifetime’ experience, one of the things she is battling to come to terms with is having to pay for data usage.

‘In Germany, there is WiFi everywhere. If you don’t have WiFi that side, it is by choice,’ she joked.

After exploring Richards Bay, she will be heading off to Durban and Mafikeng.

She encourages other students to partake in the exchange programme.

‘When you are on vacation, you would not be able to see these countries for what they really are.

‘You meet interesting people and you learn how to adapt to completely different environments.

‘I have to say though, this experience is not advisable for those who get homesick quickly,’ she said.
