Road closed after gas leak in Richards Bay

Sasol conducts a mock demonstration after suffering a previous gas leak.

ROADS leading to the Richards Bay Business Park in Alton were cordoned off this morning, when methane gas reportedly leaked from an adjacent pipe.

But Sasol representatives confirmed it was just a ‘mock demonstration’, carried out as a precautionary measure.

Sasol’s Manager for Public and Regulatory Affairs, Zwelakhe Mkhasibe was at the scene and said everything was ‘under control’.

‘We conducted this demonstration in an effort to avoid a recurrence of what happened previously.’

In June, a gas pipeline was ruptured by municipal workers, which led to various factories being closed in the Alton area.

‘It was pleasing to see emergency teams responding to the protocol efficiently,’ he added.

Following that leak, Sasol vowed to engage all relevant stakeholders to raise awareness of the safety standards and procedures to be followed when operating near the gas pipeline.
