Cleaning up Kwambo

uThungulu District and uMfolozi Local municipalities launched COGTA's Back to Basics programme.

THE Slovo housing project in KwaMbonambi, including its nearby illegal dump site, recently benefitted from uThungulu District Municipality’s launch of the national Back to Basics programme in the uMfolozi Municipality.

Municipal managers and political leaders, including uThungulu District Mayor Thembeka Mchunu, Municipal Manager Mandla Nkosi and uMfolozi Mayor Smangaliso Mgenge, took to Slovo’s streets with rakes, pitchforks and bin bags last Friday.

Once litter had been cleared off the streets, the rubbish and other items were removed from the nearby illegal dump site and a ‘no litter’ sign erected by Mchunu.

The COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) Back to Basics programme was launched last year by National Minister for COGTA, Pravin Gordhan.

The major objective of the programme is to build a responsive, caring and accountable local government.
