Court preparation wing needs a facelift

The Empangeni Court Preparation Wing is a worthy community project to support.

FACING their rapist or abuser in court is almost as traumatic for children as the crimes committed against them.

Only thorough preparation of what they are about to face and who they will encounter in court, gives them the strength and confidence to testify.

This crucial process is done in the court preparation wing, where court preparation officer Mandisa Sikakane is on the beat.

A local social worker said Mandisa should be better equipped for the mammoth task at hand.

‘With a little help and TLC, the Empangeni wing could be a haven of rest and recuperation in the midst of a fiery trial.

‘We should raise awareness of the important work done there and how a positive environment can impact on the quality of the victim’s evidence.

‘It is a worthy community project to support.’

When the Zululand Observer asked Sikakane about her labour of love, she said the programme is crucially important for victims whose lives had been hard hit by crimes against them.

‘It is one service that courts cannot do without.’

On the question how the facility can be improved, Sikakane said a durable, washable enamel paint in a pastel colour will create a bright, cheerful atmosphere.

‘The shelves in the play room must be removed because they are not child friendly and take up space.

‘The courtyard where children go when they are tired or bored is littered with stones and building rubble. A jungle gym and weather resistant benches will be a god-send.

‘Other welcome items would be curtain rails, curtains, a bar fridge, microwave, toilet brush with holder, hand towels, doormats, hooks, wall clock, extension cord, CD player, first aid box, toaster, grater, plastic toys, books, small tables and chairs – and some comfortable couches,’ Sikakane said.
