Father dies as hero

An 11-year-old girl is taking some comfort after learning her father died trying help others

A DURBAN family have found a small measure of solace after learning on Tuesday night that their husband and father died trying to help others.

Ishuanand ‘Snowey’ Kasichand (43) was on his way home to West Newlands to see his wife and two young children, when he was involved in an accident on the R34 near the Mfule River crossing last Thursday night.

The family held his funeral on Sunday, but only learned about the circumstances leading to his death after reading the online article about the crash on the Zululand Observer website.

Three families from Empangeni had a miraculous escape during the crash, in which at least five cars and as many trucks were involved in a chain of accidents along the short stretch of road.

The Schutte, Nel and Kriek families had arrived on the scene of an accident, and were being directed away from the site by Kasichand when another truck ploughed into the back of the Nel’s vehile, smashing their Jeep into the Hilux the Schutte and Kriek families were travelling in.

Kasichand died instantly as he was also hit by the truck.

Selfless efforts

Ronelle Bhoodoo, Kasichand’s sister-in-law, described him as a kind and helpful soul.

‘This came as a shock, our family is devastated. I was with my niece and nephew and was able to answer some of their questions about why their dad died.’

Bhoodoo told the Zululand Observer how she was struggling with the same questions, and that the family was taking comfort from the fact that he was trying to help others when he died.

Kasichand leaves behind a son, Adhi (5) a daughter Keshika (11) and his wife Seema (39).
