UPDATE: Second dog dies after Empangeni bee attack

The attack highlights the dangers of bee attacks for both pets and humans and residents.

EMPANGENI’s Dry family lost a second dog following a vicious bee attack on Wednesday.

Their Great Dane Shayla died after sustaining more than 100 bee stings.

The attack took place on Jameson Street when a tree fell over, causing a swarm of bees to become agitated.

They attacked a nearby gardener and then set upon the Dry’s family pets – three Dachshunds and the Great Dane.

One of the Dachshunds, Tollie, died at the scene and Shayla was taken to a vet in a critical condition, but died later that night.

The other two dogs, Miki and Tinkie, survived.

The attack highlights the dangers of bee attacks for both pets and humans and residents are urged to keep an eye out for bee hives on their properties.

‘People should keep watch over areas in their yards where bees could be living, so that the holes can be sealed up,’ said Heather Fraser of Hive Honey in Richards Bay.

She also explained that when dogs are stung, they should be taken to the vet immediately as allergic reaction could cause the canine’s lungs to close up.
