UPDATE: Tardy cattle control condemned

Mayor wants action on stray cattle roaming the streets.

THE problem of stray cattle on the City’s roads must be treated as an emergency, before lives are lost.

That was the message from Mayor Mdu Mhlongo at last Tuesday’s Exco meeting, when the ‘nuisance’ matter was raised during an item from the Community Services portfolio.

Specifically, delays in establishing a municipal pound for wandering animals were criticised.

Cllr Mhlongo rejected the explanation that ‘finer details’ such as charges, tariffs and auctions were still being formalised after the Municipal Manager had met with ‘distant communities’ that own the cattle.

‘Where is the sense of urgency? We cannot apply normal rules in an abnormal situation.

‘I do not accept that it can take almost a year to have this finalised.

‘This must be given priority,’ said Mhlongo.
