Richards Bay’s wall of remembrance
GALLERY: Plaques, statues and flowers adorn the short pier at Newark Beach.

WHILE optimistic anglers cast their bait into the waters off the short pier at Newark Beach, they do so alongside a growing and glowing memorial to the dead.
An informal ‘Wall of Remembrance’ has been fashioned at the favourite fishing spot, with the dolosse that make up the break wall increasingly adorned with monuments to lost loved ones.
Inscribed plaques, fresh flowers and even small statues look out onto the tranquil harbour waters, as though through the eyes of the departed, so honoured by their nearest and dearest.
The words tell of those of the departed who lived to ripe old ages, while others were mere babes when they were called to rest.
But the names and dates speak not so much of life and death as of severed earthly relationships and the burden of heartache borne by those left behind – as well as the joys of better days past.
Family, faith, farewell and fond memories are the prominent themes.
And what better place to scatter ashes and let their souls rest in peace as they look forward to a spiritual reuniting?
