‘Eye’ see you on World Sight Day

Tips on eye care health and the perks of wearing glasses.

WORLD Sight Day  (8 October) is an annual day of awareness to focus on blindness and vision impairment.

This day was created by the World Health Organisation in collaboration with the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness; and awareness is spread through a large number of different views.

Ngwelezana Hospital boasts one of the best eye clinic units in the province and also sports an advanced state-of-the-art laser eye machine used to treat proliferate diabetic retinopathy, vein occlusions and macular oedema common to older people.

Specialist tips

Eye Specialist Consultant Dr Shaneel Singh added that eye diseases are painless and people go blind without knowing.

‘Between the age of 45 and 50, every person should be wearing glasses.

‘Pain in the eye after reading for too long is also unhealthy as you force the eye to focus for longer than it is able to.

‘Be it reading or working on a PC, it is important to look away into the distance every 2 hours.

‘A diet of multivitamins and micro-nutrients improve eye health. Good nutrition is not only good for the body but the eyes too.’ Dr Singh said.

Perks of wearing glasses

Glasses also play an important role and those who wear them have overall advantages in life.
