Bishop moves to Durban
After 11 years in eShowe, Bishop Dino Gabriel will take up the position of Bishop of Natal in Durban.
AFTER 11 years in eShowe as the Bishop of Zululand, Dino Gabriel is moving to Durban and will soon be taking up the position of Bishop of Natal within the Anglican Church.
The popular Bishop started his spiritual career in the Roman Catholic Church and was ordained on 31 October 1980 in a village near Venice, Italy.
He left his homeland in 1991 and took up a post in eastern Mpumalanga in 1991.
He attended a three-month ‘full immersion’ programme to learn isiZulu at Tswane College.
In January 1992 he left the clergy and worked as a field worker with Operation Hunger in Mpumalanga.
In September 1993, he was spotted by the Anglican Bishop of the Highveld who offered him his first full-time post in the Piet Retief congregation where he stayed for six years before moving to eShowe.
In eShowe, he filled the vacant post left by John Salt who became the Bishop of St Helena in September 1999.
He was consecrated as the fifth Bishop of Zululand in the St Alban’s Cathedral in Pretoria.
He held this position until his consecration as Bishop of Zululand in February 2005, a position he has held to date.
Bishop Gabriel will be installed as the Bishop of Natal at Michaelhouse on Saturday, 21 November with the service starting at 9.30am.
Dino married Elizabeth in March 1992 and they have been blessed with one son and two daughters.
He says he has enjoyed his stay in eShowe – the town in which he has stayed the longest, 16 years.
He has also bought a house in the town and is looking forward to possibly returning to eShowe on his retirement which could be within the next 10 years.
