UPDATE: Was it a Hyena that was spotted?
Was it a lion? Was it a large dog? or was it a Spotted Hyena?
AFTER believing the ‘lion’ intercepted by Kwambo jogger Thokozani Msholo on Sunday was more likely just a large dog, wildlife experts are having second thoughts.
After much reader interest and closer examination and comparison of the spoor, it now seems possible the animal was in fact a Spotted Hyena.
People took to the Zululand Observer Facebook page to share their knowledge.
Michael Edward Furcey: Saw a cheetah at one of their ponds once…….
Engela Hamman: Mondi have lots of game on there land.
Wayne Vivier: That is not a lion spoor.
Suzette Rautenbach: There’s no water or food and people keep getting greedy and building….where must nature go? Leopard are known not to stay on perimeters as well as caracal. Hurt him and never sleep again. Been around for years.
Probably caracal. ..they everywhere as well as leopard. Just leave it be.
While not as dangerous as the King of the Beasts, a Spotted Hyena on the prowl in the Mondi forest close to RBM is certainly still a cause for concern.
