One dead, two children rescued amid beach chaos

A man has drowned and two children have narrowly escaped death in Richards Bay

AN elderly man was declared dead this afternoon after drowning while swimming at the Bay Hall area in Richards Bay at around 2pm.

Two young children, a girl (12) and a boy (8) also had to be rescued.

According to a statement released on the NSRI’s website, members were conducting a routine patrol when they were alerted to the drowning.

The elderly man and both children were missing in the water.

‘Police divers recovered the body of the man who was declared deceased on scene,’ read the statement.

NSRI rescue swimmers together with bystanders recovered both children.

‘NSRI medics commenced with extensive CPR efforts and the boy’s heart beat and breathing was restored. He was transported to hospital in a stable but serious condition,’ continued the statement.

The 12-year-old girl was transported to hospital in a critical condition while CPR continued in the ambulance.

No official numbers have yet been made available for the masses who descended on the beaches to celebrate the first day of the New Year.

Early reports indicate there was a large number of resuscitation cases following near drowning incidents at Richards Bay today.
